Review to come. I was genuinely surprised by this. It's got haunting art with a solid start to a story, especially for a Shonen Jump-published story.

I watched Claymore anime series some 10 years ago, when I was looking for something to fill the dark void in my heart that was left after never ending Berserk series. Gosh how I hate ongoings. I loved Claymore instantly, but alas, there was just one season and while waiting for season two, I got carried away from the franchise to other shores... But lately I found out on some youtube channel that series are finished in a pretty number of 27 volumes and that manga is actually even more awesome. I just had to check, right here and right now.

And what can I say - it's true, manga is even better. It's more concentrated, the art is beautiful, there are no fillers (you know these endless fight scenes and villains' monologues).

The world of pseudo-middle ages is brutal and cruel, the life of Claymores - as people call them for the swords they're wielding - often short and full of blood and gore, and if in the end they get killed by their colleagues - it's the best outcome, usually. Claymores are young women, trained in sword arts, possessing some spiritual - energetic (I guess??) techniques and they work for mysterious Organization and kill monsters - yomas, demonic cannibals, that are especially infatuated with human innards... I must also add, that they are, well, in some gross way physically "upgraded" to fight yomas...
Clare is also a Claymore and comparably a weak one to that, but her spiritual powers are bigger than anyone's. She's doing her job but also seeking a personal revenge and we accompany her on her way. Clare is a badass, they all Claymores are.

The story is FULL OF BADASS FEMALES you guys. They ain't Sailor Moon, trust me on that.

The art gets only better with every volume, even if the Claymores somewhat look like they were cloned in Lothlórien Elf Factory. The series have a strong Berserk and Witcher vibe, I must confess that in the beginning I even thought that the idea was plagiarized from the Witcher, because - traveling for killing monsters for money, physical modification, white hair, etc etc... But it's only a good thing. It's like if Ciri had her own spin-off series pretending she wasn't Ciri. OK, Clare is probably more badass than Ciri, who am I fooling. :P

Anyway, right now on vol. 9 myself I can only recommend the series if you're looking for something bloody, gory, with a bit of feelz, and smoothly illustrated, where females are playing the main part for the most of time. And there are plot twists all the way. I'm not finished with series yet but I already can say it's worth to spend your time on.

What this book is all about:

Clare is a Claymore, the term used for half-human, half-Yoma beings like her because of their huge swords although they do not call themselves that. Her job is to exterminate Yoma who hide amongst humans and eat their brains. She is the main protagonist and the story begins in a small village where she meets a young man called Raki. Raki's parents had been killed by Yoma and had always thought of them as all-powerful in a way, so he was interested that someone could actually beat them, especially a woman. Clare, on the other hand, was mildly surprised that he wasn't scared of her. They part in good terms and Raki heads home. But when he arrives there, he finds out that the Yoma has struck again and his uncle and his family were already dead. He was about to die himself but Clare came along just in time to get rid of the Yoma. She promptly leaves while the villagers wonder what they're going to do with Raki. They eventually decide to cast him out to the desert in fear. Clare finds him and takes him in as her cook (even though it is later revealed she doesn't need one and only took him in since he reminds her of herself as a child).

I love the dark and gruesome world of Claymore. Although some of the characters disturbed me, I was still intrigued. A definite must read for those interested in such a genre!

I'm giving this manga such a high rating, based solely on the fact that the heroine here is one hot bitch.
Seriously, such a kickass girl!
I'm not really into shōnen or horror, never have been. I read mostly shōjo and josei, although I've always wanted to give this genre a try - I actually did a few years ago, with Berserk, and it kinda awed and broke me at the same time.

Claymore was recommended to me by a dear, super-cool friend who's really into fantasy and videogames and she talked about it - about her favorite manga - with such a passion, that I opened its first volume as soon as I could.
I'm not really a big fan of this art, it's a bit too "angular" and sharp, for my tastes, but after I realized that the MC's - and heroines, literally - were going to be only women, I fell in love with it.
I'm sure it'll surprise me and I'm not even scared yet, by the ridiculously huge amount of splatter and bodily parts flying around in almost every page of the manga. Dario Argento, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodríguez and Takashi Miike prepared me for this.

Bring it on, Mrs. Yagi.

In a dark fantasy world overrun by shape-shifting demons called Yoma, a mysterious organization has created half-breed warriors called Claymores to combat the monsters terrorizing the world. The story centers around a Claymore named Clare, a determined woman who seeks revenge against the Yoma that killed the person she loved and admired most. On her journey of revenge, she slowly unravels the horrifying mysteries surrounding the origins of the Yoma, the shady organization that created her, as well as the true meaning of her own existence.

When I first started reading, the story instantly gave me Vampire Hunter D, The Witcher and Berserk vibes, only this time it featured a captivating and sympathetic female lead named Clare. We don't know that much about her at first, but beneath her stoic and determined facade is a struggling little girl with a tragic backstory of loss and a painful drive of revenge interfering with her ability to live a normal life. Despite her cold and sometimes monstrous demeanor, Clare has a big soft spot for humanity and defies the savage nature of the demon blood running through her veins. She's chilling, badass and most importantly, sympathetic.

Over the course of the series, we meet dozens of amazing female warriors, each with their own unique powers, personalities, demonic transformations and interactions with Clare. Theresa of the Faint Smile who serves as a motherly role model for Clare was my favorite character in the story, and I ended up being impressed by the sheer amount of badass, likable female warriors that were introduced later on in the series that I ended up growing attached to as well. It's not too often you see dark fantasy or sword & sorcery series where 99% of the main cast are well-written female warriors.

Some plot points get a bit messy in the second half of the series, but the action, characters, horror and monsters never stop being thrilling and it also has a very satisfying conclusion despite having a few road bumps along the way. It's a great series if you enjoy the Conan-esque monster of the week formula with added layers of mystery and emotion.

Not quite a four, but strong enough--especially for my first manga!

This fantasy tale centers on gruesome man-eating creatures that take human form, a precocious young boy, and a silver-eyed warrior whose lovely looks belie the monster within.

Volume 1 doesn’t do much more than lay the groundwork, but it does offer enough information to intrigue me. If future installments delve deeper into the Claymore organization, the series could prove fascinating.

Premise aside, I did have some problems. The artwork is not a style I would generally seek out, but that’s part of the reason it’s taken me so long to get into manga and anime to begin with. In Claymore, many of the characters look far too similar--an issue compounded by the fact that it’s in black and white.

Fight scenes are another issue. While I think the battles would look phenomenal in animated form, the fast-paced, bloody action doesn’t translate as well in this format. The encounters prove repetitive, making me hope for more on the side of character development.

The final chapter of volume 1 incorporates more detail about the Claymores as well as a twist, which makes me hopeful that the series will become more detailed as it progresses. Overall, worth a try and I plan to check out the anime, too.

Claymore is like Berserk, with more boobs and less context. That is how I see this series.

Claymore’s strong point is not its story, which to be frank is linear and straight-forward to the most part. The basic premise is about fighting fire with fire and thus the monsters that plague humanity in this series are to be dealt by humans possessing monster abilities. It sounds interesting to build something around it but that only happens in terms of characterization amongst the cast and not in terms of world-building. So yeah, we have monsters and monster hunters and a Medieval-like world. If you expect anything more to it, you won’t get much other than vague explanations of “there is this organization here and that band there”. There will be very little info about why the world is as such until late in the story where it simply changes most of the main characters instead of filling up the blanks. The pacing of the story can easily be divided into short arcs with each one having its own set of monsters and settings. Each one adds something to the whole, but as I said, it only does it in terms of characterization and not much world-building.

In all, the story is average and goes nowhere in specific thus it gets less than the base (4).

Characters on the other hand are the meat of the series, as most of the selling point is their psychoanalysis and interaction with one another. Claire, the main heroine, begins as a heatless killing machine and along the way we get to see a lot about her which make her far more than a robot without will, following orders and going around killing things just because she was ordered to do it. The same can be said about most other main characters, such as the rest of the Claymores and that annoying sidekick Raki.

A thing to notice is that this series reverses gender roles. The Claymores are all women yet behave as brute males, while Raki is a guy and is a spineless idiot who is better fit as a daddy’s girl. Feels weird but it is not negative.
What does feel negative is the adversaries, the Yoma, who to the most part are just mooks that exist to be killed or generic bosses. And as I said we get very little about where do they come from. Not only that, but they don’t really feel like monsters most of the time. Rather they are shape shifting cannibals with too human behavior for the gruesome creatures they are supposed to be. Makes them look stupid.

But who cares about them, the story is about the Claymores, whose worst enemy ends up being their own selves, as they slowly all turn to Yoma themselves. Yes, nice idea to build something around it but since the story is loose, it kinda ruins it. Plus Raki is an extremely annoying character, unable to be sympathetic to anyone. He is supposed to be the guy who reminds Claire that she is still human and make her have cozy feelings and such but ends up being a burden who the only thing he does is nagging, making unrealistic remarks, standing in the way, and generally causing more trouble than help. Supposed, that is what it means to be human but come on; monsters are eating people alive everyday and he wanted everybody to be a big happy family. This stops being humane and ends up being utter bullshit. If humans are so naive, then hail to the cunning cannibalistic Yoma.

In all, the main cast is interesting and gets lots of immersion but at the same time it is left without complete catharsis, the enemies outside the frenzied Claymores are cardboards, and Raki is an ass. Thus, they are a bit above average (6).

The art is very good as far as shapes and backgrounds go. High on detail with lots of visual effects and dark palette colors to transmit the feeling of a grim world overrun with dread and death.

I found the character figures rather unappealing, as the way the faces were drawn felt weird. Plus, all Claymores look too much alike because of their identical uniforms, weapons, hair color and eye color. Also the common Yoma are drawn too simplistic and human-like and it’s easy to see them just like brawn-skinned bandits with fangs.

Action scenes are ok but not that great. Although there is a lot of gore going around, most of it is limbs flying and fountains of blood gushing all over the place. Internal organ anatomy is way off. Most battles don’t last much either.

In all, the aesthetics are great but character figures are kinda identical and simple and there is very little actual battle duration for such a heavy on action series. Art gets a rather good mark (7). [/b]

I don’t find much reread value in this series, since the story is too linear, simple, and has Raki in it. (3)
My enjoyment is also low (4), as the negatives outnumber the positives.

If this series had more variety in faces, more duration in battle, a more complete world-building, and Raki would be dead from the first chapter, then I would give it a 10.

I'm all for gruesome, mysterious, sexy, gory, with a tinge of romance kind of manga — and this one is just spot on.

The thing I loved the most is that the heroine, Clare, is a total badass. This manga is a bleeding battlefield since the beginning. The story of Teresa and Clare is just heart-wrenching. It does not contain any dry pages, and it really got me going since the first chapter. I just fell in love, warts and all.

The tragic backstory of the characters are compelling — it has the subtlety of a monster truck. It's like my mind is made up that this or that character has a cold, psychotic, or strong personality, and then, bam! my perception about them is in new light after I read their story. There's a lot going on underneath the surface more than they let on.

I admire the friendship among the Claymores. They fought together from the start as comrades and sticked together as soul sisters until the end.

As for the romance... is it just me or is there some kind of spark between Clare and Jean? They're like, my first ship in this manga! (Followed by Raki & Clare, Helen & Deneve, Clare & Sid, Undine & Deneve, Rigardo & Isley, Miria & Hilda, Clare & Galatea, and a lot more of ships that won't possibly fit in this review!)

....... but, I still ship Raki and Clare the most.

One of my favorite characters is Raki! I'm just amazed that he worked from zero to hero by sheer force of will. I admire him ever since he was a funny little kid. He's amazing and strong as hell. My ovaries just explode after I saw his transformation. I simply love him.

This manga also contains a lot of heart-wrenching, gut-busting moments where it hits the core of my being. One of those moments is that scene about Clarice and Miata. Damn right in the feels.

The ending of the story, man, I didn't see that one coming! This is one of the best manga that I have ever read. I don't regret the time I invested on reading it. I'm all for surprises and this one never — not even once — failed to amaze me. I have also watched the anime adaptation of Claymore, shortly after reading the manga. They tweaked the story a bit in the anime, but nevertheless, they are still both amazing.

An enjoyable first volume featuring a badass lady cutting down monsters with some very violent, epic attacks sequences.

Stop me if you've heard this one: Claymore is the story of the rare breed of badass that can hunt monsters in a world full of otherwise helpless humans.

So it's one of those, with the novelty being that the badass warrior is a woman. Claire is terse, almost mechanical in her progress from job to job, and inscrutably logical. Her first big "quirk" is expressing apathy over whether she dies on the job. Her employer even likens talking to her to talking to a monster. Standard badass stuff that you're sure will eventually peel away to reveal how *deep* and *damaged* she is. It's more annoying when she gets an obligatory nude bathing scene in the first hundred pages, which is clearly just there to titillate.

If my review is dismissive of the mechanical parts, it's because there isn't much else to this first volume of Claymore. It really is just the tropes of wandering warriors and their sidekicks with no special twist or life. Personally, I'm weary of badass characters and their bland approaches to conflict, and even wearier of the fetish for their traumatic backstories. Telling me the sociopath had a traumatic childhood is usually a sign you've put little thought into psychology. And at least for this volume, that's all this is giving you: woman who's good at stabbing monsters goes forth to stab monsters.

Even the settings Norihiro Yagi draws are generic EuroFantasy backdrops, dirt roads and barn ceilings. Even the fight scenes aren't particularly fun to follow - they're basic, You-Die or I-Die battles broken into panels of exaggerated poses. There's minimal personality to them, which is the natural result of having a stoic badass heroine go up against stock yoma. Nobody behaves in surprising or dynamic ways. Nobody cares about more than the thing in front of them.

Claymore broke for me when the sidekick chased Claire down only to run into another tall, lithe, buxom warrior in top-heavy armor and a miniskirt. It's good the sidekick announced this wasn't Claire, because there was so little novel about the character design that I wouldn't have expected I was supposed to differentiate them.

I expect that, like Berserk, it's a series that won its fandom as it went along and unpacked personality and plot later. But this volume makes a poor first impression.

دوم اینکه روایت داستان عالیه به طور مداوم چیزای بیشتری راجع به دنیای مانگا و کلیمور ها متوجه میشیم و فلشبک های خوبی هم داخلش بود
سوم اینکه به لطف قلم نویسنده به خوبی به احساسات شخصیت های مختلف پی میبریم و باهاشون ارتباط برقرار میکنیم
تا الان که این یک جلد رو خوندم به هیچ وجه شاهد افت چه از نظر نویسندگی چه از نظر طراحی نشدم و به نظرم هر چپتر از چپتر قبلی بهتره

**جایی تو اینترنت خوندم که این مانگا یه کپی بی ارزش از ویچر هست چیزی که بر اساس بازی و سریال ویچر دستگیرم شده تا اینجا اینه که گرچه شاید از ویچر الهام گرفته شده باشه اما دو تا ویژگی مهم در رابطه با یوما ها و کلیمور ها وجود داره که باعث ایجاد یک تفاوت اصلی بین این مانگا و ویچر میشه گرچه یک سری تم ها ممکنه مشترک باشه اما از نظر ماهیت کلیمور ها و ماهیت هیولا ها و احساساتشون کلیمور ها خیلی با ویچر ها تفاوت دارن.جدای ازین تفاوت ها اینکه حتی اگر این اثر یه "کپی بی ارزش" از ویچر بود من باز هم این رو ادامه میدم به نظر کسی کاری ندارم.دو جلد هم از کتابای ویچر دارم هر وقت حالم بهتر باشه شاید اونا رو هم خوندم لازم نیست بین این یا اون انتخاب کرد میشه جفتشو خوند**

I don’t read much manga, but this series is right up my alley!

Basic premise: Claymore is about a young woman named Clare who is a Claymore—she is part-human part-yoma (monster). Claymores are hired by villages to kill yoma that are terrorizing them.

Man is this manga brutal! I don’t want to spoil anything, but you can expect blood and lots of bad-assery. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Clare is not a super likable character, but in exactly the way as she’s intended to be. She’s distant and sinister, and only has one mission: defeat yoma and don’t become a monster in the process. I’m not sure she’s doing so well on the second part, considering how absolutely cold and isolated she keeps herself.

If you are into monsters and warrior chicks, Claymore is a good book for you!

on the list of women who can do no wrong in my eyes, and i will protect forever, clare has risen among the ranks and she’s going to stay there. i didn’t really expect much from the first volume but i found myself completely engrossed and in love with the simplicity of the story and the way it was told. additionally, i was in the mood to read a fantasy manga which felt just right and this delivered.

there was no heavy info dumping or long winded explanations. instead, the lore was shown, not told in a very simplistic and straightforward manner that really worked for the story.

things i loved:

- clare’s bewitching badassery and i’m excited there’s even more of that to come
- minor SPOILER………….. that clare allowed raki to join her on her adventure because it made me so happy to see her have a companion and for raki to have someone too
- raki’s ability to cook. for some reason i love seeing characters eat and his eating and cooking was an added bonus
- the depth shown in clare’s character even though it just hit the surface but it was done really well.

the first volume really got my attention and i will definitely be continuing the series. i just wish the art was much more detailed and in the style of berserk but the style still works so i won’t be complaining much.

it feels so good to find another manga series to obsess over and hopefully i don’t lose interest too soon.

Holy fuck this was so good

In this world, the Yoma, demonic-like creatures feeds on humans, and so, they create an entire different race that’s half-yoma, half-human. All of them are silver-eyed women whose weapon is a claymore (a sword that’s 55 inches long at least). Nobody knows their names, so people just call them ‘Claymores’. These powerful half-breeds fight against the Yoma ‘cause they only feed on humans.

Now in this first volume we follow Clare in a few jobs, and there’s a lot of action scenes that are not censored at all, so please be aware that this should be read only by people +18. To me it wasn’t a big introduction but we still got to see a little bit of information on what Claymores are.

I watched the anime like +10 years ago so I do remember a few things that I want to see from the original work. Though I must admit that the art style is not really my favorite, I know most of the times mangakas improve with each volume, so hopefully we get to see him change for the better.

There is something about a girl wielding a sword that intrigues me. I love that this manga has a strong female lead. There's just enough blood and gore that I can stomach. The plot is okay so far, nothing great. I hope it gets better in the next volumes.

Pues... primer tomo meramente introductorio. Poca cosa a destacar. La idea no es de la más originales y el dibujo es bastante simplón.

This was a good start. It's a dark fantasy series and gives me Berserk vibes.

The story starts with the arrival of Clare in a town. She is a claymore. Half yoma half human. They hunt yomas and she rescues this guy named Zaki and we follow their adventures as they hunt down Yomas. We learn the harsh life they lead and what Clare has to do to her friend Elena.

It's a solid start and is a quick read and is pure action and you just see their elegance and grave and deadly skills and their struggles and all. The art is so good and each page is a delight.

I just love the central character of this book. Clare is a Claymore, a silver-eyed half-monster that fights monsters called yoma, and she gets followed by Raki, a kid whose family is slayed by yoma. Clare kicks ass, but doesn't say much - Raki is the usual somewhat silly, somewhat annoying manga kid, with exaggerated reactions. But somehow it works from the start. Clare just works, I guess because of the contrast with the kid, and the kid doesn't bother me that much.

I loved the awesome ideas behind the Claymore. It's just an awesome, awesome idea, and I love it.

Edit 2022: I downgraded my rating - after re-reading it, it seems that my initial reading was too much influenced by the anime. The first volume is not very well put together - the first four issues are loosely linked and the story has less of an impact than I would expect from the genre. It really feels a bit out of order - Clare's relationship to her old friend, Elena, is not sufficiently used, the scene ends too fast and there's no emotional impact when she has to kill her old friend. Raki, her human kid-friend, is not very compelling as a character - his motivation to move from his home town is very loose, and if he's in love with the silver eyed witch then it's badly communicated.

It's interesting how my POV on this changed in a few years.

Monsters. Fantasy world. Interesting characters. Epic gorey violence. This book should be right up my alley.

I can't get into it though, and I will not be continuing the series.

The art style is just plain ugly. Barely any good facial expressions. & the characters designs are bland. The monsters look cool. But for such and epic, sad, dramatic story as it it's trying to present, the art just doesn't live up. It's got what should be a super moving super sad ending. But it falls flat with how emotionless the art is. It's just so flat and boring and lifeless.

Did any of that make sense?

& the dialogue is stilted and awkward. It kept repeating itself. Maybe it was supposed to be for emotional impact or some shit. But it just made me feel annoyed.

It could have be wonderful. But bad writing and artwork destroyed any hopes for it being anything more that q boring, toss away pile of "meh".

I won't recommend it. In fact, just skip "claymore" entirely.

Şimdi... Benim için alışıldığın dışında bir manga olduğunu söylemekle başlamak istiyorum. Ben genellikle shoujo, josei en fazla fantastik temalar içeren mangaları okuduğumdan shounen türünü yabancıladım. Biraz olayların dışında kalmış gibi hissettim kendimi. Bu yüzden konuyu kavramak ve okuyup okumayacağıma karar vermeden önce 3. cilde kadar devam etmek istiyorum. Amaaaaa...

Mangaları okurken en büyük kriterim çizimlerin kalitesidir. Yani çizimler kötü ise mangaya devam etmek için çırpınmak zorunda kalıyorum. Ve bu manganın çizimleri benim standartlarımın altında! Çizimlerde hiç ayrıntı yok, baktığımda kabataslak gibi geliyor gözüme. Bu şartlar altında 3. cilde ulaştığım vakit kendimi ödüllendireceğim. :)

Claymore is one of those mangas that made want to start reading manga again.

This is a shonen manga, so it starts slow, there are plenty of sometimes-pointless battles and the cast get unnecessary bigger as time goes by (with plenty of somewhat stock characters, even Clare). Why I did give it 5 stars then? Because, unlike 99% of shonen, and even shojo manga out there (oh, the irony!), Claymore is all about the women.

This manga is full of women: women who move the plot forward, women who form friendships among them, women who may or not be in love with other women, women who empower each other. The male character are scarce (a welcome change!) and there is very little romance.

Claymore is currently my favourite manga.

Still the first parts so nothing that interest me that much. I read this 'cause when i search about mangas that are like Attack on Titan it suggested this. I have high hopes for this. I hope it's worth my time lol...

Datemi un dark fantasy con un bello stile illustrativo e narrativo, e vado fuori di testa. La storia mi intriga, questo mondo abitato da demoni chiamati yoma, a cui vi è un'unica resistenza, le Claymore. Esseri ibridi, metà esseri umani metà yoma. La cosa curiosa è che solo le donne possono sostenere questo status. Della nostra protagonista, Clare, già dal primo volume ci viene mostrato qualche istante del suo passato. Non vedo l'ora di saperne di più, e proprio per questo non ho dato il massimo, perché voglio tenermelo per i prossimi volumi che credo mi sorprenderanno.

Ho visto l'Anime diversi anni fa e ricordo che mi piacque molto — nonostante la parte finale, da quel che so, sia molto diversa dal Manga e la trasposizione animata non lo copre nemmeno completamente. Quindi penso sia arrivato il momento di recuperare il Manga e come inizio devo dire che è molto buono, non vedo l'ora di proseguire.
